Cooper Hospital
Mafia Queens of MumbaiCooper Hospital is a medical institution in Mumbai that enters the narrative of Mafia Queens of Mumbai at a moment of profound personal crisis. It is the place where Ashraf Khan, the wife of the wanted gangster Mehmood Khan, is directed after she hears that a man shot at Santa Cruz airport has been taken there. The hospital thus becomes the setting for the first, official account of her husband's death, a revelation that shatters her world and sets in motion her long, painful reckoning with the truth of his killing.
The Hospital as the Site of Revelation
Ashraf's journey to Cooper Hospital begins in the chaos of the airport parking lot, where she hears faint gunshots and sees policemen huddled together, drawing white markings on the ground near a pool of blood. Told that the wounded man has been taken to Cooper Hospital, she hails a taxi and rushes there, still hoping that Mehmood, whom she had seen smiling at her only five minutes earlier, will reassure her that he is fine. However, when she arrives, both the reception and the hospital staff are unaware of any patient admitted with gunshot wounds. They direct her instead to the Andheri police station. This dead end forces Ashraf, who has led a protected life, to steel herself and go from station to station in the area, desperately trying to locate her husband. Finally, a policeman directs her to J.J. Hospital, where her worst fears are realized: she is told that a man named Mehmood Khan, a wanted gangster, has been shot dead in an encounter at Santa Cruz airport.
The Morgue and the Confirmation of Death
At J.J. Hospital, Ashraf's ordeal deepens. She knows the official account is a lie, reasoning that Mehmood could not have carried a gun past airport security and therefore could not have been armed. She asks to see the body, clinging to the small hope that it might not be her husband. A nurse leads her to the morgue, where she trembles at the sight of the wrapped bodies. Pitying her, the nurse holds her hand firmly and takes her to a body. It is him—the same man who had smiled at her before disappearing into a crowd. Ashraf bends and holds the body, remembering the last time she had held him this close, the night before he left for Dubai, when he had made love to her passionately. She entwines her fingers with his lifeless ones, the same fingers that had wiped her tears when she was upset. The vague premonition that had left her anxious earlier in the day finally reveals itself: Mehmood is dead.
The Aftermath and the Official Story
The hospital staff tell Ashraf that her husband was declared dead on admission, with a report stating he died of four bullets in an encounter after he fired at the cops. The next morning, her relatives tell her that the press has reported that police inspector Emanuel Amolik led the encounter. Ashraf memorizes the officer's name, preoccupied with her thoughts, unaware that she is being observed by someone who has come to pay his respects to her husband. Mehmood's body is buried the next day at Nariawali Qabrastan, but Ashraf is not allowed into the burial ground; she stubbornly waits outside the masjid until all the rites are performed. Cooper Hospital, though not the site of the killing itself, is thus the place where the official narrative of Mehmood's death is delivered and where Ashraf's private grief and suspicion begin to take shape, marking a turning point in her story and in the book's account of the Mumbai underworld's violence and its human cost.
